Thomas Anders – The voice of a German pop legend
Thomas Anders is one of the most successful and consistent artists in German music history. With his unmistakable voice, international stature, and a career spanning more than four decades, he has made pop history – and kept it alive to this day.
Early years and musical influences
Thomas Anders was born on March 1, 1963, as Bernd Weidung in Münstermaifeld in Rhineland-Palatinate. His musical talent became apparent at an early age. Piano lessons, first stage appearances, and participation in talent competitions formed the basis for a professional career.
The artist name Thomas Anders marked the beginning of his journey into the international pop world in the early 1980s.
Global success with Modern Talking
The international breakthrough came in 1985 with Modern Talking together with Dieter Bohlen. The debut single “You’re My Heart, You’re My Soul” became a number one hit worldwide. This was followed by a series of successes that made music history:
“Cheri, Cheri Lady,” “You Can Win If You Want,” “Brother Louie,” “Atlantis is Calling,” and other titles made Modern Talking the most successful German pop band of all time.
With over 125 million records sold worldwide and meanwhile over 380 million streams per year, Modern Talking has had a lasting impact on the sound of the 1980s to this day.
Separation and solo career
After the band split up in 1987, Thomas Anders embarked on a successful international solo career. He released albums in several languages and continued to develop musically. Pop, soul, adult contemporary, and jazz became important forms of expression in his artistic profile.
These phases clearly showed that Thomas Anders was not just part of a successful project, but an independent artist with substance and versatility.
The comeback of Modern Talking
In 1998, Modern Talking reunited. The comeback became one of the most successful in pop history. New albums, modernized classics, and sold-out tours took the duo back to the top of the charts.
In 2003, the collaboration ended for good – but the Modern Talking legend lived on.
Success in the new millennium
After Modern Talking finally split up, Thomas Anders focused entirely on his solo career again. In addition to chart successes abroad with English-language albums (Strong, Cosmic), he successfully established himself in German-speaking countries with modern pop and schlager productions.
A highlight of this period was his collaboration with Florian Silbereisen. Their joint albums reached number one in the German album charts twice and became hits with audiences across generations.
With the project “Thomas Anders sings Modern Talking,” realized together with his producer Christian Geller, Anders made another mark on the 40th anniversary of Modern Talking. The reinterpreted classics were once again very well received by audiences in 2025.
All six albums reached the top 10 in the German charts and were awarded gold status as project.
Bon vivant, cooking enthusiast, and entrepreneur
In addition to music, Thomas Anders has shown a great passion for enjoyment, cuisine, and good craftsmanship for many years. As a self-confessed cooking enthusiast, he developed his own line of wines and spices that bears his personal signature.
The wines were created in collaboration with the renowned St. Antony winery, and the spice line in collaboration with Hartkorn Gewürzmühle GmbH. Both projects reflect his commitment to quality, authenticity, and enjoyment – far removed from mere celebrity, but rather driven by genuine enthusiasm.
Charity & Social Commitment
Thomas Anders, who was born in Koblenz, has been supporting children and families in his hometown for many years. Since 2009, he has been the official patron of the Kinderschutzbund Koblenz e.V. (Koblenz Child Protection Association) and is committed to promoting children’s rights and supporting young people.
He uses his fame to raise awareness of the association’s work, supports charity campaigns and events, and motivates the public to take joint responsibility for children’s issues.
Personality and attitude
Thomas Anders is considered thoughtful, disciplined, and down-to-earth. Despite his international success, he has retained his authenticity. He lives with his family in his hometown of Koblenz and repeatedly emphasizes values such as respect, gratitude, and reliability in interviews. His consistency is reflected in his career, which has grown over decades.
